The Lights Out Paddle is hosted by The School of Yak in Mayfield and Port Stephens Kayaking Group, and will take place at Stockton during the annual worldwide event this Saturday, March 29.
During Earth Hour, homes and businesses are asked to reduce their energy consumption by switching off non-essential lighting for one hour.
When this year's theme of Lights Out for the Reef was announced, Glenn MacFadyen jumped on board and organised a kayaking event.
The Mayfield resident has seen first-hand the damage done to waterways while sailing and kayaking and he wanted to do something to raise awareness about ocean pollution.
The result is the inaugural Lights Out Paddle at Stockton.
Before paddlers take to the water, they are invited to sit in their kayaks on the lawn and watch Earth Hour's latest documentary Lights Out For The Reef.
After the film, the kayakers will paddle out to the Stockton Bridge and watch Newcastle switch its lights off for Earth Hour.
Mr MacFadyen hopes darkness will descend on the city as Newcastle residents support the environment.
